2 Important Things We Learned From The Growth of Social Media Networks in 2013


I stumbled upon (no pun intended) the following infographic that illustrates the growth of social media networks in 2013 while searching for information from last year’s social media marketing world conference that is held annually in San Diego, California. I thought this infographic was very interesting and I wanted to share it with all of you for two important reasons.

Firstly, the information displayed in the first graph (registered users per each network) shows that social media networks have grown incredibly fast over the past five years and continues to expand rapidly as technology develops. But the amount of different niche social networks becoming popular is a beast of its own.

I firmly believe we are just at the forefront of what social media will become in the next five to ten years. Social networks will continue to grow into deeper aspects of society and this is great for advertising because marketers will have an easier time finding their target audiences.

Secondly, the largest group of users adopting social media use are 45 years-of-age and older. This is very important because it shows that more of society is accepting social media and embracing it for their own purposes. With more older active users online, there are more opportunities to target them digitally.

This forces companies who may have never thought about going social to adapt some of the popular platforms to be able to continue to market to their customer’s needs.
